This photo shows the coast of Sardinia - two boats dead in the water as another boat speeds towards them bringing help. What happened that stopped the two boats from moving forward?

Maybe the engines were not powerful enough or they stopped working because the engines had been neglected.  Maybe all the components that operate the boats were not working smoothly together, or maybe the captains did not have enough experience to handle the boat properly.  There could be a variety of reasons why the boats are dead in the water but the bottom line is - there are two boats that aren't going anywhere.

But, when a boat's engine performs properly and the captain knows what to do, then a strategy can be developed of where to go, how to get there and how long the journey will take. This makes everyone feel safe, it eliminates wasted time and energy and it creates a smooth and pleasant journey.

Big or Small?

Ahhh another water picture - this one is of Villefranche-sur-Mer on the French Riviera and demonstrates the various types and sizes of vessels on the Mediterranean. Can you imagine how big the engines are in cruise ships, just to keep them moving in the right direction?

They're definitely not the same as the engines needed for small yachts or motorboats. It's a similar situation in business where there are different sizes and types of operations. If the engine for a business is sales and marketing, how much engine power do you think your big or small business needs?

Here's we are (D'Arcy and Lynda Kavanagh) in Girona, Spain. We travel a lot, primarily in Europe, always by bicycle, and most of the time by waterways. Travel is very important to us and to how we operate WOW Communications & Training. We travel because travel creates empathy, understanding and wisdom through experience and it's a lot of fun! Travel also allows us to observe consumer behaviour and how other countries use sales and marketing techniques. Whether we are presenting a training session, an online video course a keynote address or working with our coaching clients, we will always weave in thought-provoking ideas that we have gained from our travel experiences.
